Between 30th June and 4th July, millions of school children took part in the first ever National School Sport Week (NSSW), a government initiative supported by Norwich Union. In her role as National School Sport Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes has been spearheading the campaign, touring the country to meet children at various schools. Dame Kelly participated in the sporting activities taking place and helped to celebrate the amazing achievements in PE and school sport over the last year.
Dame Kelly, Denise Lewis and other high profile athletes visited the Hackney School Sport Partnership, before accompanying some of the children to the gardens of Downing Street to meet Gordon Brown. The Prime Minister's residence played host to Taekwondo demonstrations and various multi-skills activities involving primary and secondary school pupils.
Showing his support, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "We need to put school sport back where it belongs - playing a central role in the school day. National School Sport Week is a great opportunity to do just that and I'm confident that it will help get young people fit and physically healthy."
Norwich Union and Aviva are the team behind UK Athletics and have been supporting the sport from playground to podium since 1999. National School Sport Week is one of many grassroots initiatives that are helping us to achieve our target of engaging 15 million children in athletics by 2012.
