The Spartans Community Football Academy

The Spartans Community Football Academy vision is to become the no.1 community club in Scotland by 2015. They would like to increase the membership within the girls' and woman’s section and create a disability section.

About the initiative

The new Academy will open in July 2008 in the heart of North Edinburgh, an area widely recognised as being one of the most deprived in Scotland. It will provide first class facilities and deliver community coaching programmes across various sports. The new facility will consist of a:

- A full size floodlit community synthetic pitch
- Smaller multi-sport synthetic pitch
- Hard court basketball court
- Grass stadium pitch
- 8 changing rooms
- Physiotherapy centre
- Club Room with small cafe area
- Boardroom which will also double up as an education and learning centre.

The Academy has charitable status, with any running surplus each year re-invested back into the long term welfare of the facility. This will help the Academy to deliver its social aims and objectives, in particular 'to increase numbers participating in sport and recreation activities'.

The Academy will provide a free venue for local schools during the school day, also the Active Futures Programme.

In addition to providing 1st class facilities for local Schools, Telford College, Youth Clubs etc., the Academy will provide a new home for The Spartans Football Club.

The Spartans family is made up of 80 people in the Adult Section and 500 people in the Youth Section. A key aim is to increase the membership within the Girls and Woman’s Section. It's also Spartans intention to create a disability section within the Club in the future. Spartans FC vision is to become the no.1 Community Club in Scotland by 2015.

What we could do with a bronze award worth £1,000

£1,000 would be used to enable the Academy to develop a range of multi-sport community programmes. Specificaly, this amount would be used to buy equipment and recruit coaches, enabling us to deliver and evaluate a number of pilot programmes, across a range of different sports and recreation activities.

What we could do with a silver award worth £12,500 or even the gold award worth £50,000

£12,500 would enable us to recruit a part-time Community Programme Coach to provide after school programmes for local school children for 1 year. This would benefit between 80-100 children each week.

If awarded £50,000 we would recruit a full-time Community Programme Coach for 1 year. A large part of this role would be to work with other bodies to develop education based programmes which use sport as the hook and motivation for taking part. In addition, the Academy would buy equipment for our Physiotherapy Centre, where local people would enjoy heavily discounted treatments, subsidised through Gold Award monies.

Our final word

Whether it's the taking part or coaching others, learning new skills or working in a new role, the Academy has the potential to make a real difference to the lives of young people of all ages in North Edinburgh and beyond.
